Looking at the gradings before the match, it seemed that we were the favourites on the top two boards, but the remainder were probably in the favour of Littlethorpe. In the event, the result flattered us; but it makes a nice change and we are happy to take the match and game points on this occasion.

On Board 1, Peter was a pawn down until close to the endgame, but then slowly but surely turned the game from drawish to a win; his opponent defending well and making it a tough game. I had a quick and easy win on Board 2, due to my opponent missing a mating attack in a passive position.
John's game on Board 3 seemed likely to be a draw from early in the evening, each player successfully cancelling all of his opponent's initiatives. Pete, on Board 4, was a pawn up but in a poor position; it seemed that a draw was the best he could hope for. However confusion over the digitial clock caused a time trouble rush when each player had over 20 minutes left; when the confusion had been resolved, Pete's position was much better, and he went on to win.
Jez, on the bottom board, had an even game until the later middlegame when he moved up a gear and decisively gained material and converted the win soon after.
The next match for the 3rd team is next Thursday (30th) at home against Loughborough 2.

Andy had a good game against John Robinson; a complicated Spanish in which Andy was eventually able to win a pawn. My game on board 2 also went well, winning an isolated queen's pawn, until a manoeuvre which will, no doubt, become to be known as the "watkinson pin", and my shock to find out that it was anything but, blundered my queen.
Just like Ed a couple of weeks back in the final round of the Wylie Cup, Andrew on board 3 found that Pat Hogan is a sharp player and well deserved of his improved grade. At the start of the middlegame, he had a reasonable position, but by the end of the middlegame had lost his queen for a rook.
Peter, on Board 5, took his very strong opponent to the wire. An impessive and close game, with Peter, at one point, just one move short of a winning position. It took Mike's full powers to turn the game round to his favour.
The next match will be a lot easier - we are playing Wigston 1 - the league champions.

It's my move, and I have a good attack on the go on the queenside against the Black king. I was looking closely at 19. Nc6 with a decisive fork on King and Queen, but this is prevented by the black Knight on e5. So... I thought, I would play 19. f4, kicking the knight away and then play 20. Nc6+ - I could see his reply 20 ... bxc6 could be met by 21. Qxc6! and mate is unavoidable on either a8 or b7.
Great! But then I realized there was a major flaw in my analysis... What is the flaw and what would you play instead?

W-B B-WThis was the last round match in the summer rapid play competition and the decider between the first and second placed teams. A win or a draw would give us the cup, while a loss would give Braunstone victory.

Our team suffered due to the dropping out of our Board 3 player, Phil Harlow; Peter Turland bravely stepped in at short notice to fill the vacancy. The result shows how both Ed and Peter were struggling against much stronger opposition.
Congratulations to Baunstone.
Walter is a very good rapid game player and did the business on board 1; I think I did well to come out evens with Paul Colburn, although Paul helped me in the second game with a uber-sharp line in the Benko Gambit which lost a bishop within 10 moves... Ed did better in his first game than his second but it was always going to be an uphill battle against an ex-County Champion. Peter had a close game in the first round, a piece up but later allowed a pawn to queen.
On the journey home, Walter summed up the mood in the car: If it is good to allow other teams to win trophies occasionally, then the Wylie Cup is a suitable candidate...
